MISTER recently had the pleasure of meeting Ghislain Rousseau, Co-Founder of Fétiche Armada in Montreal and he charmed us with his casual quebeqouis accent, warm demenour and comfortable manliness. We got to talking about his love for leather culture and he easily motivated us to sponsor their upcoming event over Labor Day Weekend! We are really excited to return to Montreal and meet more of our Canadian users.

MISTER: What is Fétiche Armada?

Ghislain: Fétiche Armada started 3 years ago, when my husband, Benoit, and I decided one night that Montreal needed more fetish/leather parties. We created it as a promoter of events for the city and have been throwing parties ever since (every two months).

Next, we opened the store on Rue Ste-Catherine in the Village, the gay area of Montreal. We recognized there was an evolution in the kinds of gear people were seeking out - stuff that we couldn’t find locally. So we started partnering with the best fetish houses in the world, such as Mister B, E7-Gear, OxBalls, 665 Leather, and our own private label… One Man Armada.

We believe that no matter what your experience or your kink, respect is paramount. Whether you are a newbie or a long time experienced kinkster, you will be taken as you are and we will teach and learn from you.

As someone who's starting to get back into the travel game, I've been finding it hard to plan the gay parts of my destinations. Last Summer, I spent the week in Barcelona and while it was an incredible trip, I still felt we hadn't mined the gay-friendly city as much as we should have. You'd think with well-traveled friends and the internet at my disposal I'd be be perfectly set but I still felt like I was at a bit of a loss for where to go and what to do. There's plenty out there on the internet but that actually ends up being the problem. Aside from listings, it's hard to get a sense of what's offered and if the destination is any good. I even downloaded a few travel apps for my iPad/Phone, but found them sorely lacking in gay recommendations for the most part.

I stopped reading travel magazines ages ago for two reasons: I wanted to go everywhere and couldn't afford anywhere. But last year's trip to Spain reignited my passion for travel and I made a promise to myself to get out of the country at least once a year. So I started to research destinations and find a trusted source for gay travel. There's Out Traveler, but I haven't seen a printed issue in some time, so I think they may be web only at this point.

How To Survive A Plague

If the chills I got watching the trailer for the new (and very buzzed about) documentary How To Survive A Plague are any indication, this movie is going to be extremely emotional, powerful, and ultimately wrenching.

"How To Survive A Plague is the story of two coalitions—ACT UP and TAG (Treatment Action Group)—whose activism and innovation turned AIDS from a death sentence into a manageable condition. Despite having no scientific training, these self-made activists infiltrated the pharmaceutical industry and helped identify promising new drugs, moving them from experimental trials to patients in record time. With unfettered access to a treasure trove of never-before-seen archival footage from the 1980s and '90s, filmmaker David France puts the viewer smack in the middle of the controversial actions, the heated meetings, the heartbreaking failures, and the exultant breakthroughs of heroes in the making."

The film opens September 21 in select cites and is a stunning and inspirational account of the early days of this disease and why we all need to stand up and fight.

I know, I know. This has been done to death, but I am seriously torn about this picture. I've always been a briefs man. Probably always will be, but this photo is giving me pause. I mean, on the one hand, boxers are loose and floppy and if you really look hard enough you may be able to see up the shorts or get a little surprise out the slit on the crotch. I guess you could say there's more potential for exposure which is always fun. But there's something about shapely briefs that just do everything for me. So I must ask, even though it's been asked before and oh so generic: boxers or briefs?

Imprisoned for HIV

HIV is Not a Crime

Did you know that in some states you can go to jail for not disclosing your HIV status? There are laws, in 32 states no less, that have been built on stigma and fear and allow for people, like Nick Rhoades, to be sent to jail. Rhoades was sent to prison for not disclosing his HIV+ status to a one-time partner, even though he used a condom and his viral load was, at the time, undetectable. Said partner was never infected and yet Rhoades' life was turned completely upside down. CNN has the full story which I urge you to read.

I recently worked with the Sero Project, a nonprofit whose focus is to end inappropriate criminal prosecutions of people with HIV for non-disclosure of their HIV status, potential or perceived HIV exposure or HIV transmission, among other things. Their site is a resource center that is not only combatting stigma and fear based laws, but protecting those that it need it most. They've got a useful map on their homepage so you can find out what your states statues are and show you how to take action to help get them removed.

I fear that this is something that not many people are/were aware of. I know I wasn't. But I'm glad it's starting to get the attention it deserves.

A wise woman once said, "Vacation all I ever wanted. Vacation all I ever needed."

Really, is there anything greater in this world than getting to take a break from it? I think not (unless you're able to get a little somin' somin' while you're on it). For some it's easy to meet people on vacation, but really this should be true for all. You're out of your element, you're relaxed, most likely more open. And when all of these things radiate off of you, people take notice. Mostly because everyone else is in the same (possibly literal) boat that you are. The trick to any successful getaway is to leave every expectation you have at home. Removing the idea of hooking up or meeting someone special is about the best thing you can do. The last thing you want to come out of a long planned trip is to be disappointment. And if you're able to take time off of work, isn't the whole point to not have to do any? The same applies for meeting people, you shouldn't have to work hard to make a connection. Instead, focus on being in the moment and enjoying your surroundings, friends, and activities and chances are the rest will come to you. That friendly, carefree attitude that comes with being on holiday (that's for you Europe) can be seen from a mile away and it's ever so inviting. One of the greatest joys of travel is making new friends. Throw a smile at someone or a playful hello. Ask for directions, advice or comment on some of more unique characteristics of wherever you are. These are tiny, easy ins that will take you a long way while you're away from home.
